This page features facts about homelessness and poverty, at the local, state, and national levels. I found them to be truly staggering as I stumbled upon each one, in my research, and hope that they will move you to a mindset of action and change.
- As of the 2010 National Census, Clark County has a population of 35,613 people. .2% of this number are considered to be homeless on an emergency level.
- 649,917 people were homeless on a given night. (Congress' Homelessness on a Single Night portion of the 2010 Homelessness Assessment. 407,966 of these people were individuals, and 241,951 were people who belonged to a family.
- The U.S. Census Bureau reports that the percentage of people below the poverty level in Kentucky was at 17.7% between the years of 2006 to 2010. Nationally, the statistic was13.8%.
- "The cost to help the homeless in communities is staggering.The results of a two-year study conducted by the Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville showed that it cost nearly $89 million over a two-year period to shelter and care for just over 7,000 single homeless adults." - Kentucky Interagency Council on Homelessness
- Every year, 30,000 youth age out of foster care and 20,000-25,000 age out of the juvenile justice system.
